Culture and Hair View

For many indigenous people hair can be a connected to “…family, tribe, and Creation”, and doing hair and dressing hair up has significance based on what is happening in the tribe, what ceremonies are going on, and a representative of self and tribe identity (Stensgar 2019). The boy in the photo is from this video where it is discussed on how important embracing your hair is as an indigenous person, and the connection to your spirit and identity your hair has. Barrettes in this manner would be part of the culture that ties in to embracing the culture tied into hair for Potawatomi people, and can be used during meaningful interactions when doing your own or others hair. Self-expression by using items such as barrettes allows for pride and care to be shown of the hair.
