Woven Basket

"The Next Generation" by Cherish Parrish, front view

This basket was created intentionally as an art peice and not made to be functional. Traditionally, baskets are used as light containers that are made to easily hold or store various items, including food or clothing. Cherish Parrish has used traditional basket-weaving practices to make this piece. As she describes, basket-weaving "once purely utilitarian, has evolved into an art form" (Parrish, 2016). Parrish is a sixth generation basket weaver and has been weaving since the age of twelve (Parrish, 2009). She uses her basketry skills to educate and express her Anishinaabe heritage.
