Trade

A look at the inside of the hat, showcasing how the diverse materials fit together (2013.7.96).

Trade has always been a prominent component in Iroquois culture. Trade with the Europeans allowed for new media with which the Haudenosaunee could display their artistry. Ribbon, velvet, and glass beads became accessible and consequently used in decoration, but it was not physical resources alone that were exchanged between the Iroquois and settlers. Ideas were widely shared, altering even what what was considered fashionable (Biron, 2011b). This hat is in the design of what is called a “Glengarry Cap”. This style may have been imitative of the British military uniforms worn by the British regiments in Canada starting in the 1870s, or it may have been inspired by Scottish immigrants in the Haudenosaunee region for trade or military involvement (Palombella, 2015). Click here for more details about the context of the Glengarry style.
