inside of box.jpg

Inside of painted birch bark box from MSU Museum.

This image of the inside of the birch bark box helps to envision what physical purpose it might be used for. It also details the beauty of birch bark itself. Some staining on the inside suggests it was used, perhaps for medicines or food (Inez). Details of wear and stress are noticeable on the edges, paint and leather handles. Perhaps this box wasn’t made for economic reasons but for every day purpose for storage or possibly a personal gift for a woman who identifies with the design. This box has a history we don’t know about and its mysteries help us to explore Indigenous women and their lifestyles. (Jenness, 10).
