Numerical Symbolism
The turtle shell used to create this piece could have been intentionally chosen because the turtle shell holds significance in Anishinaabe culture. Typically, turtles have 13 sections on their shells, which relates to the 13 Anishinaabe moons, or months of the year. Additionally, there are 28 smaller scales circling the edge of the shell, which relates to the 28 days of the lunar cycle, from full moon to full moon (Thirteen Moons Curriculum 2010, 5).
Additionally, the floral quillwork features seven flowers on the plant, which could have been chosen by the maker to relate to the Seven Grandfather Teachings of the Anishinaabe. Click here to listen to a narration of these teachings by an Anishinaabe elder.
