The creator of this box, Mildred Aguonie née Desmoulin, is a quillwork artist and resident of Manitoulin Island, Ontario. She comes from a family of quill artists including her mother, Evelyn Irene Desmoulin, siblings, and daughter, Melanie.1 Mildred's work is characterized by the tufted quills gracing top facade of her boxes, a technique which started with Rose Kimewon-Williams, who may have passed the knowledge onto Mildred (Fenimore Art Musuem).

Mildred's talent received national attention in 1991 when a quill box of her creation was gifted to Prince Charles and Princess Diana while the royals toured the Science North Science Centre in Sudbury, Ontario (Science North).
