Reciprocity
The interconnectedness of all aspects of nature is a core value within many Indigenous cultures. The Indigenous understanding of our position on this planet is that we, as humans, are just a ripple within the larger cosmological ocean. When we understand the other beings on this Earth as being in relation to us, we are able to cultivate communities that are built upon the act of reciprocity. A community that takes must also give. Gratitude is woven into our lifeways.
Yvonne Walker-Keshickâs quillbox is a testament to a crucially sacred relationship with water-beings, such as this leaping trout. Fish have always given themselves to our communities so that we may not starve, and, instead, thrive. In turn, we show gratitude and honor them with beautifully intricate artforms, such as this quillbox. We are reminded that throughout our histories, nature has always provided for us, for as long as we are willing to show our gratitude.
