Ceremonial Dance Fan, 1991

This fan can be used during many different ceremonial dances. One of these dances is the Jingle Dress dance. There are many origin stories about this dance, and one of them is given by Brenda Child in the book Reflections (ICTMN, 2011). The story goes that an Ojibwe man had a dream to help save his daughter from the influenza. In his dream he saw the Jingle Dress and the instructions for the dance that was to be performed. He then helped to create this dress for his daughter and once she performed the dance she was healed. The Jingle Dress dance is therefore a healing dance (Jennifer Attaway). While fans like this are created for ceremonial use, this specific fan by Carolyn Beck was created for commercial purposes as an art piece.
