View 4 - Renewal
Using and making the basswood bag was a lost tradition, however there has been a movement to revitalize the use and making of the basswood bag and other basswood items. This revitalization is in conjunction with broader movements of Indigenous revitalization and also part of the ongoing cycle of renewal. There is an Anishinaabeg prophecy stating that the seventh generation will turn back to traditional teachings as a form of resisting and moving past colonialism. Currently there is a strong revitalization movement. For example, Potwawatomi peoples are still here and currently engaging in these renewal activities. Within MSU, the American Indian and Indigenous Studies program has instituted programing with Indigenous revitalization at its core. These spaces are a place where Indigenous peoples can imagine a world beyond colonization.
