Kinship with Nature
One major theme for this box is the respect for nature which could be understood as a relative to humans and who provides for everything we need. Images of leaves, trees, water, and animals are depicited on all sides of the box. The natural dyes of the quills speak to the beauty of nature that does not need to be altered. There are numerous images of Indigenous women interacting with nature, such as with the eagle, weaving with sweetgrass and carrying out activities by the water. The artist wanted to illustrate her message of the significance of the relationship shared between women and nature, how special and intricate this bond is, and how meaningful it can be.
